Quilty News

The Sit and Sew day at the Moose Lodge was a huge success. Many of the attendees asked about written instructions for making the Quilt-as-you-go Strippy Quilt. The photo of Carol’s quilt shows you how it looks finished. So, here are the instructions…

  • Backing 42 X 60” piece approximately
  • Batting 44 X 60” approximately
  • 2.5 inch strips of coordinated fabrics of varying sizes, about 50 strips needed.  Sew

Strips end to end, using a diagonal seam. You’ll have one long strip!

Press backing fabric. Spray baste fabric and adhere batting to wrong side. Make sure backing is SMOOTH on right side with no wrinkles or puckers.

Prepare sewing machine with coordinated thread and walking foot.

Lay first strip onto the top of prepared batting and backing face up. Sew along top edge to secure, left to right. Cut off when you get to the right edge.

Lay second strip on top of first strip, right sides together and sew ¼” seam along bottom, cut off at end.

Fold second strip over onto batting and smooth, making sure the seam is FLAT! Repeat with third strip, always making sure seam is FLAT! You may stop every few strips and iron both sides to make sure everything is FLAT AND SMOOTH!

When you get to the last strip, press, square up to desired size and bind! You’re done!
