April 10, 2014 meeting
President Carol Stearns starts meeting.
Pam Martin showed the house block for Carol’s President’s gift – she just wants the quilt blocks and will assemble them. Blocks are due by September meeting.
Attached is the block that we are making for carols presidents gift. If you still need the background fabric I will bring more to our next meeting. Remember to sign your block. Please have completed blocks to me by our September meeting.
Please remember to pay close attention to the roof portion of the instructions.
Treasurer Marie Robert announced current balance $2,082.39. Needs sign-up for July, August, and September drawings.
Vice President Linda Frick reminded everyone about the May 3 workshop at Moose Lodge, zig-zag pattern, quilt displayed, bring Jelly Roll (or about 40 2 ½ inch strips) and 2 yards of background fabric (pre-cut into 6 ½ inch strips).
Carol displayed this month’s Quilters Newsletter block of the month in the Ooh-Rah series.
Charity – Edith Bullock reminded everyone we’ll have a quarterly drawing for all who make charity quilts this year – Carol Stearns won the first drawing. She has free stuffing for those who make stuffed animals. Pillowcase kits and totebag patterns are available.
Carol Stearns did a “honing your skills” presentation and this month’s round robin block. The next step for the round robin is half-square triangles all the way around. The alternate way to do HSTs is start with two 4-inch blocks. Sew ¼ inch seam all the way around the outside, then cut diagonally in half twice. Using the easy angle ruler for 2 ½ inch HST: Cut 2 ½ inch strips, right sides together. Use ruler’s triangle marking at the edge, cut apart pairs and sew together. Carol then conducted the round robin drawing for this month’s blocks – Addie Lowry won Lynn’s gift card, and all blocks were selected by the participants.
Programs Chair Kerry Kastl explained our June birthday party this year will be Rumble Jumble. Bring 1 yard of fabric (children’s bright color) to buy a table space for selling fabrics, notions, etc. Also we’ll have a table with donated items; you can buy tickets to apply for your favorite item(s) and these funds will go to our outreach (Burger King gift cards). We will also have finger foods and birthday cake.
Kerry presented member Cathy Messner, who gave us tips on preparing your quilt for longarm quilting.
A Thank you letter from guest speaker Cathy Messner
I would like to take this opportunity to THANK YOU all very much for the
gift certificate, it was very thoughtful. I so much enjoyed sharing my
tips in preparing your quilts to be quilted.
In my presentation I mentioned other longarm quilters in our area,
Sherri Easom, Patty Butcher and Amy Bouchard, I forgot to include Marcy
Gallagher, that was not intentional, like the others she is an
exceptional longarm quilter, as demonstrated in the quilt Jessie shared.
I hope you all enjoyed the program, please feel free to call or email if
you have any further questions.

Carol Stearns reminded everyone the Pensacola quilt show is this week (Fri & Sat). Also A&E has a new blog with a sale Fri & Sat.
For the Round Robin Blocks, add a 2.5” half square triangle row all around. Take a 4” square of fabric and sew ¼” around on all 4 sides. Cut diagonally twice and you have 4 perfect HST’s at 2.5”. We only have a few more rows to add and I appreciate the participation and seeing all the fun blocks! Carol
In June we are having a Rumble Jumble Trash to Treasure Event with cake and finger foods. If you would like to sell some items, you need to purchase a table space for a yard of bright fabric. We will also have an table with donated items that you can take chances on. If you have anything you would like to donate, please let us know,
Also, the Mystery Zig Zag workshop on May 3 is still open for the price of $5 for your lunch. Please let Linda Frick know if you plan to attend. Thanks. Carol
