CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR APRIL 16TH WORKSHOP

Cutting Instructions for April 16th Workshop

Please read all the way through before selecting fabrics

For this project you will need several different color fabrics that blend well together. They can be a scrappy mix of lights, mediums and darks in many colors or they can be one color in a large variety of shades. I used teals and purples in lights, mediums, and darks for the demo.

You also need:

  • 2 ½ yards of tone on tone white fabric (or whatever you want to match your color scheme) for the background & a 2” inner border.
  • ½ yard of a dark fabric in your color scheme for the binding
  • Several bags to put fabrics in

And, if you would like to add an additional outer border:

  • 1 ½ yard of an additional fabric for a 6” outer border

First, select 12 medium to light tone fabrics and 12 medium to dark tone fabrics.  You only need a fat eight (9” x 21”) of each color.

  • Cut all of the 24 fabrics into a 9”x16” rectangle.
    • Put 12 light to medium fabrics in a bag and label it A.
    • Put 12 medium to dark fabrics in a bag and label it B.

*Feel free to repeat fabrics if you wish. I repeated each color twice in the demo, giving me 12 different fabrics (6 dark, 6 light); each fabric was a fat quarter (18” x 22”).

Regardless of how many different fabrics you choose to use you will end up with 12 – 9” x 16” light to medium fabric rectangles and 12 – 9” x 16” medium to dark fabric rectangles.

Next, you will cut the white tone on tone back ground fabric for sashing and inner border:

  • Cut 2 – 10” x width of fabric strips.
    • Subcut into 48 -1 ½” x 10” strips
    • Put in a bag and label C

  • Cut 1 – 19” x width of fabric strip
    • Subcut into 24 – 1 ½” x 19” strips
    • Put in a bag and label D

  • Cut 4 – 1 ½ “ x width of fabric sashing strips
    • Put in a bag and label E

  • Cut 7 – 2 ½” x width of fabric border strips
    • Put in a bag and label F or go ahead and sew ends together on angle and neatly store until ready to use.

For six inch outer border use the 1 ½” yards of border fabric:

  • Cut 8 – 6 ½” x width of fabric strips
    • Put in a bag and label G or go ahead and sew ends together on angle and neatly store until ready to use.

Next, you will cut the biding out of  ½” yard of dark fabric:

  • Cut 7 – 2 ¼” x width of fabric binding strips
    • Put in a bag and label “Binding” or go ahead and sew ends together on angle and neatly store until ready to use.
